The American actor and musician Joseph David Keery was born on April 24, 1992. In addition to playing Steve Harrington in Stranger Things (2016-present), he has also appeared in the comedy film Free Guy (2021). Djo is Keery’s stage name under which he releases music. In the 1970s, he was a member of the psychedelic rock band Post Animal.
Newburyport, Massachusetts, was Keery’s birthplace. Architects are his father and English professors are his mother. The second of five children, he is the oldest.
A Newburyport native, Keery attended River Valley Charter School, a Montessori elementary and middle school, and Newburyport High School. As a child, he participated in Theater in the Open, a performing arts camp at Maudslay State Park, but he began acting in high school after being encouraged by his older sister.
In 2014, Keery graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from The Theatre School at DePaul University.
