In Agent Elvis (2023), a new adult animated series from Netflix co-created by Elvis’s wife, Priscilla Presley, viewers are invited to imagine a world where the King of Rock and Roll becomes a top-secret government agent. With Matthew McConaughey as the voice of this super-spy version of Elvis, the series promises a wild ride of globe-trotting adventures, blending the wackiness of Archer (2009-) with the larger-than-life personality of Elvis Presley.
While some might consider it blasphemy to suggest that Elvis’s popularity has ever waned, there’s no denying that the music icon has experienced a recent resurgence in pop culture. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis (2022), which received an Oscar nomination, helped kick-start this resurgence with a standout performance from Austin Butler as Elvis. In addition to this, films like Elvis & Nixon (2016), which stars Michael Shannon, tell the true story of Elvis’s meeting with President Richard Nixon, resulting in a somewhat unofficial role as a government operative. This fascinating piece of history has become the subject of many tall tales, as Elvis lacked any real government authority, and Nixon viewed the visit as a PR stunt. Agent Elvis takes this premise to a whole new level, imagining what could happen if Elvis became a true secret agent, with all the bravado and swagger he’s known for intact.
Matthew McConaughey, the Oscar-winning star of “Dallas Buyers Club,” will be lending his voice to the lead character in Netflix’s upcoming animated series “Agent Elvis.” This marks McConaughey’s first role in an animated television series, although he has previously acted in animated films such as “Kubo and the Two Strings” and both “Sing” movies. The supporting cast includes Don Cheadle, Kaitlin Olson, Johnny Knoxville, Niecy Nash, and Tom Kenny, with Priscilla Presley also starring as herself and co-creating the show.
Joining the cast are Jason Mantzoukas (“Invincible”), Asif Ali (“Wandavision”), Ed Helms (“The Office”), Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), Fred Armisen (“Documentary Now!”), Chris Elliott (“Salvage Hunters: The Restorers”), George Clinton (“Trolls 2: World Tour”), Craig Robinson (“The Office”), Simon Pegg (“Hot Fuzz”), Ego Nwodim (“Saturday Night Live”), Gary Cole (“Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby”), Jamie Costa (“The Cowboy & The Samurai”), Tara Strong (“Loki”), Dee Bradley Baker (“Star Wars: The Bad Batch”), Jim Meskimen (“How the Grinch Stole Christmas”), Carlos Alazraqui (“Fairly OddParents”), Cree Summer (“Voltron: Legendary Defender”), Ilia Volok (“Gemini Man”), Tony Cavalero (“The Righteous Gemstones”), Michael-Leon Wooley (“AJ and the Queen”), and Eric Bauza (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”).
