Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Before diving into “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always,” it’s worth noting that this 30th-anniversary special isn’t the best starting point for newcomers to the franchise. Nor is it a dramatic reimagining like the Joseph Kahn and Adi Shankar short film, so don’t expect a gritty reboot. Instead, this nostalgia-filled special follows the many other anniversary crossover specials the franchise has done over the years.

However, what sets “Once & Always” apart is its focus solely on the original “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” iteration, rather than trying to connect past and future. While still retaining the show’s trademark cheesiness, the special offers an emotional tribute to the fallen Rangers, adding a poignant layer fitting for the celebration.

Set in 2022, the special sees returning voice actor Barbara Goodson’s Rita Repulsa causing global chaos, forcing Rangers from around the world, and perhaps some new heroes, to unite against her. Although more polished than its predecessor due to HD and widescreen, the special maintains its tokusatsu spirit, featuring decent action scenes and returning actors performing stunts.

While “Power Rangers” wasn’t known for its prestige TV or experienced actors, “Once & Always” showcases poignant and memorable performances, particularly from returning veterans David Yost as Billy Cranston and Walter Jones as Zack Taylor. That being said, “Power Rangers” still comes with its over-the-top, cheesy lines and quips.

Despite this, there are some differences in tone. “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always” is darker, with a revenge theme, making it reminiscent of “Under the Red Hood” for “Power Rangers.” While still intended for a younger audience, the special features talks of killing the villains, adding a refreshing edge to the story.
