When Argentina meets Poland at Stadium 974 on Wednesday, the South Americans will aim to leapfrog Poland and qualify for the 2022 World Cup’s last 16.

Heading into their final group match, the two-time world champions are just one point behind Poland at the summit on three points.

As Poland defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 on Saturday, Robert Lewandowski finally scored his first World Cup goal at 34 years of age.

Eight minutes from time, after Piotr Zielinski had opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, the Barcelona striker capitalized on a defensive error to wrap up the win for the Eagles.

Despite ‘fulfilling his dream’ on the biggest stage of the world, Lewandowski and his teammates still have work to do, as Czeslaw Michniewicz’s side attempts to reach the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

As of writing, Poland is the only nation that hasn’t conceded a goal in their two group matches after their first two games. Moreover, the Eagles have now kept a clean sheet in all four of their recent international games.

The two-time world champions have conceded in each of Poland’s 11 previous meetings with Argentina. The last time the team faced La Albiceleste, however, they won 2-1 in a friendly match in 2011.

Poland will finish top in Group C if they win on Wednesday, and a draw could also be enough if Saudi Arabia fail to beat Mexico. In the event Saudi Arabia wins the World Cup with maximum points, they will be eliminated from the tournament.

As Argentina boosted their chances of reaching the knockout rounds with a 2-0 victory against Mexico on Saturday, four days after their shock 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia.

When it mattered, Lionel Messi stepped up after an underwhelming first half performance. In the 64th minute, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner scored from outside the area to break the deadlock, then set up Enzo Fernandez in the closing stages to seal their first three points in Group C.

As the dressing room erupted in jubilation at the end of the game, Lionel Scaloni’s men – regarded by many as one of the pre-tournament favourites – appeared to have recovered their confidence in advance of their group finale against Poland.

For Argentina to avoid finishing second in Group C, they must get maximum points from Saturday’s clash with the Poles. That could result in a potentially difficult last-16 match with France, which beat La Albiceleste 4-3 in a thrilling match at this stage four years ago.

The last two matches Argentina has had with European nations were both at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where they lost 3-0 to Croatia and then lost to France in the last 16. Argentine teams have progressed to the knockout round in 12 of their last 13 World Cup finals.

Assuming Argentina defeats Poland and Saudi Arabia loses to Mexico by a larger margin than Scaloni’s team, Argentina will finish first in Group C and qualify for the knockout rounds. In the event Saudi Arabia fails to win, a draw may be enough for them to advance in second place.
