The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), also known as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, is a government program in India that was enacted by the legislature on September 7, 2005.
The aim of the MGNREGA is to provide a legal guarantee of at least 100 days of unskilled physical labor to every rural household, thus providing the right to work to rural families and increasing their livelihoods. Adult members voluntarily undertake such work. This program is implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development of the Government of India, in partnership with state and local governments.
The objective of the MGNREGA program is to provide employment to rural households, especially during times of crisis and during periods of economic downturn when other sources of employment are not available. Under the program, eligible families can apply for work at the village level, and employment is provided based on a first-come, first-served basis. The program includes a range of activities, including the construction of rural infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and irrigation channels, as well as natural resource management such as water conservation and afforestation.
