The condition of government schools in our country is no secret. It is often believed that only children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds attend these schools. However, there are parents who, due to financial constraints, cannot even send their children to government schools. To address this and ensure that children are not only brought to school but also provided with proper nutrition and development, initiatives like the Tamil Nadu School Breakfast Scheme are being implemented.
The Tamil Nadu School Breakfast Scheme was launched by the Tamil Nadu government on September 15, 2022, in Madurai. This scheme aims to provide breakfast to approximately 1.14 lakh students from Class 1 to 5 in 1,545 government primary schools across the state. Due to a positive response, the scheme was expanded on August 25, 2023, to cover around 17 lakh students in nearly 31,008 schools across urban and rural areas of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu was the first state to introduce the mid-day meal scheme for government school students.
The primary objective of the Tamil Nadu School Breakfast Scheme is to ensure that children attend school without skipping meals. Regular nutritious meals help focus their attention, enhance learning, and positively impact cognitive development. Providing nutritious breakfast ensures that children do not suffer from malnutrition, anemia, and growth-related issues like stunted growth or abnormal weight. The key objectives of this scheme are:
In response to the scheme’s positive feedback, the Tamil Nadu government decided to expand it on June 7, 2023. The scheme was extended to include 31,008 government primary schools, benefiting approximately 1.7 million school-going children. Chief Minister MK Stalin initiated the extension of the scheme by personally serving breakfast to children at a school in Tirukkuvalai, Nagapattinam district. Notably, Tirukkuvalai is also the birthplace of former Chief Minister and DMK leader M. Karunanidhi. Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Chief Minister Stalin and a cabinet minister in Tamil Nadu, was also present at the launch event. Additionally, elected representatives launched the scheme’s expansion in their respective constituencies, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring that children receive a nutritious breakfast before starting their school day.
