The Maharashtra Government initiated the Majhi Bhagyashree Kanya Yojana on April 1, 2016, to promote girls’ education. This scheme rewards parents who opt for sterilization after the birth of their daughter with financial support. Here’s a look at the details of the Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana for 2023.

The scheme aims to tackle issues like gender imbalance, sex-selective abortions, and female infanticide. It strives to encourage girls’ education and transform societal attitudes toward girls, ultimately ensuring a brighter future for daughters in Maharashtra.

Under the Majhi Bhagyashree Kanya Yojana 2023, the deposited funds for the girl child do not accrue interest. Interest will be received when the girl reaches the ages of 6 and 12. The full amount can be accessed by the girl when she turns 18, provided she is at least 10th pass and unmarried. To avail of these benefits, parents need to apply for the scheme.

Benefits of Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana

  1. Maximum two daughters per family are eligible for the scheme.
  2. A joint account can be opened in the National Bank in the beneficiary girl’s name and her mother’s. Both will receive accident insurance of Rs 1 lakh and an overdraft facility of Rs 5000.
  3. If family planning (sterilization) is carried out after the birth of a girl, the government provides Rs 50,000.
  4. After the birth of two girls, family planning results in Rs 25,000 each for both.
  5. Funds from the state government can be used for the girl child’s education.
  6. The annual income limit for families has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh to ensure more people in Maharashtra can benefit from the scheme.
  7. Parents must undergo sterilization within one year of their first daughter’s birth or within six months after the second daughter’s birth.

Eligibility for Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana

  • The applying couple should be residents of Maharashtra.
  • Families that opt for sterilization within one year of their first daughter’s birth are eligible.
  • Families that opt for sterilization within six months after the birth of their second daughter are eligible.
  • If a couple has a third child, neither of the previously born daughters will be eligible.
  • The family’s annual income should be less than Rs 750,000.
  • To access the scheme’s benefits, daughters should be at least 10th pass, 18 years old, and unmarried.
