The Orange Cap in IPL 2023 will be bestowed upon the player who concludes the season with the highest run tally. This prestigious accolade has been a hallmark of the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inception in 2008.
In the previous season, Saudi Aramco served as the sponsor for the Orange Cap, marking the first instance of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) partnering with a distinguished entity for both the Orange and Purple Caps.

The inaugural recipient of the Orange Cap in IPL history was Australian batsman Shaun Marsh, who amassed 616 runs in 11 matches for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) during the 2008 season, boasting an impressive strike rate of 139.68.
Virat Kohli of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) holds the record for the most runs in a single IPL season, having scored a staggering 973 runs in 2016. Notably, Kohli is also the highest run-scorer in the IPL overall, with a total of 6624 runs.
Chris Gayle, a former teammate of Kohli at RCB, remains the only player to retain the Orange Cap in consecutive IPL seasons. He achieved this feat by securing the Orange Cap in the 2011 and 2012 seasons, amassing 608 runs and 733 runs, respectively.

The rules governing the Orange Cap in IPL 2023 are as follows:
The Orange Cap is a prestigious accolade presented to the player who accumulates the highest number of runs in a single IPL season. The competition for the Orange Cap commences once all participating teams have played at least one match in the tournament, with the title changing hands each season.
The Orange Cap is awarded to the player who consistently compiles runs throughout the season, showcasing exceptional consistency rather than sporadic high scores. The player who outperforms their peers and tops the run-scoring charts is presented with the Orange Cap in IPL.
In the 15 seasons of the IPL, five Indian players have claimed the Orange Cap. The distinguished list includes Sachin Tendulkar (MI – 2010), Robin Uthappa (KKR – 2014), Virat Kohli (RCB – 2016), KL Rahul (KXIP – 2020), and Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK – 2021).
Securing the Orange Cap at the end of the tournament brings significant recognition and attention, often propelling players into the spotlight for the following season. It can also provide a platform for players to revive their international careers or stake a claim for a spot in their respective national teams.
Shaun Marsh stands as the sole uncapped player to have won the Orange Cap in IPL history. He achieved this remarkable feat in IPL 2008 while representing Punjab at the age of just 24.
Super Overs are played when teams are tied at the end of a regular 40-over game. However, the runs scored during Super Overs are not considered in the Orange Cap standings, nor are they added to a player’s overall IPL career runs.
Despite the presence of many outstanding all-rounders in the IPL, no player has managed to clinch both the Orange Cap and Purple Cap simultaneously in a single season.
As of now, England’s Jos Buttler holds the Orange Cap, having hammered 863 runs in 17 matches during the previous season. Buttler, who plays for the Rajasthan Royals, is the frontrunner to retain the Orange Cap in IPL 2023. However, he faces stiff competition from accomplished batsmen such as KL Rahul, David Warner, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Hardik Pandya.
