Akshay Kumar (born 9 September 1967), better known as Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, is a Canadian-Indian actor, film producer, martial artist, and television personality who works primarily in Bollywood, a Hindi language film industry based primarily in Mumbai.
With over 100 film roles under his belt, Kumar has won several awards, including two National Film Awards and a National Film Award for Best Actor. Kumar has been a prolific and successful actor in Hindi cinema. His films earned domestic net lifetime collections of *20 billion (US$280 million) by 2013, and *30 billion (US$420 million) by 2016. He appeared in 113 films, of which 52 were commercially successful.
He began his film career with Saugandh in 1991 but came to mainstream success with Khiladi a year later. The film launched Kumar’s career as an action star in the 1990s and was the first of a string of action films starring Kumar, later referred to as the Khiladi series. Despite a successful first attempt at romance in Yeh Dillagi (1994), Kumar’s role range expanded dramatically in the following decade. As well as romantic films such as Dhadkan (2000), Andaaz (2003) and Namastey London (2007), he has made drama films including Waqt (2005) and Patiala House (2011). Hera Pheri (2000), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), and Singh Is Kinng (2008) received positive reviews.
Kumar won two Filmfare Awards for his negative performances in Ajnabee (2001) and Garam Masala (2005). His career had fluctuated commercially since 2007 when he had four consecutive box-office hits in India; this was consistent until a short break between 2009 and 2011, following which he had several more hits, including Rowdy Rathore (2012) and Holiday (2014). Additionally, around this time, the critical response to several of his films improved; he received favorable reviews for his performances in Special 26 (2013) and Baby (2016) and won the National Film Award for best actor for his work in Rustom (2016). In addition to Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017) and Pad Man (2018), Kesari (2019) earned him attention for its socially conscious core.
