War Sailor, a new three-part series on Netflix, explores the impact of World War II on common people and merchant sailors. Based on the Norwegian-language drama by Gunnar Vikene, the show follows Alfred, a family man who sails aboard a Norwegian vessel for 18 months with his friend Sigbjørn ‘Wally’ Kvalvåg. The drama portrays the struggles of sailors, who have often been overlooked in history, as well as the aftermath of the war that people never quite recovered from.
The series builds a gripping narrative from the outset, leading to a satisfying conclusion in the final episode. While Sigbjørn and Freddy’s friendship is at the center of the plot, the series also sheds light on the undocumented parts of the war. In the second episode, it is revealed that Freddy’s family had died during the war, leaving him unaware and lost.
The finale shows Sigbjørn taking care of Freddy’s family and forming a bond with them while Freddy is believed to be dead. However, it is later revealed that Freddy is alive and living in Singapore. The emotional exchange between the two friends highlights the sacrifices made during wartime and the struggle to rebuild lives in its aftermath.
War Sailor is a poignant and thought-provoking series that is now streaming on Netflix.
